Not everything gets more expensive

At the moment almost everything seems to be getting more expensive, but there are exceptions. For example, car insurance is now cheaper on average than last year. It’s a minor difference, but still.
While high inflation makes almost everything more expensive, car insurance has actually become cheaper in the first half of this year. This is stated by the financial comparison website Geld.nl. According to the site, this is partly because there were fewer car fires and other forms of vehicle crime last year. “Insurers incorporate this effect in the premiums for the first months of this year,” says expert Amanda Bulthuis of Geld.nl.
The average premium for car insurance between January and June was €80.74 per month. Last year it was still €82.27 per month. The favorable claims figures that insurers include in their premiums are probably partly due to the corona pandemic. As a result, many people stayed at home more often last year.
Increase expected
Unfortunately, it is probably a matter of (a short) time before car insurance also becomes more expensive on average. Bulthuis believes that premiums will rise again in the near future. “Now that people are driving or going to work more often, crime is increasing,” she explains. “In addition, high inflation also means that repairs to cars are becoming more and more expensive. As a result, car insurers will have to increase the premiums again to be able to pay the increasing cost of claims.”
