If you’re collaborating on a document in Google Docs, anyone you share the document with can make changes directly. But what if you don’t agree with the changes? That’s what Google Docs’ suggestion mode is for. This feature helps you process suggestions that others have made. This is how you add suggestions in Google Docs!
Comments
The features suggestions and Comments are often confused. That makes sense in some way because both are a form of feedback. You first select a piece of text to which you want to add a comment. Then use the right mouse button and choose the command add a comment. You type the comment you want to post in a box that appears in the right sidebar. Click on the blue button add a comment to confirm.
To see all comments, use the button Comment history. It’s the icon at the top right, which looks like a speech bubble.
suggestions
Suggestions is a display mode of Google Docs. Normally you are in mode To process. You change the mode by clicking on the arrow next to the pencil on the right of the button bar. There you choose one of the three display modes: To process, Make suggestions and See. In the latter mode you view the print layout.
In mode suggestions every operation you perform is tracked. If you delete a piece of text, it will appear as a green strikethrough. A piece of text that you add is also marked in green.
Permissions
Then you can invite someone to rate the suggestions. You must make sure that this person has the correct permissions. That’s why you go to File / Share and there you enter the e-mail address of the person with whom you want to share this document. That person will receive a link and does not need to have a Google account. In this dialog box, click on the down arrow next to the option Processor and there you choose the option Responder.
Someone with commenter privileges can make suggestions without permanently deleting the original text. An editor is free to make changes without Google Docs tracking them. There is also the authorization Reader for someone who can only view the document.
When someone has entered suggestions in your document, you must accept or change those changes. Every change is tracked and you can finally view those details in the right bar.
