Get in much cheaper
What comes after Range Rover? Range Rover Sport. As with its big brother, the Sport plug-in hybrid powertrains also dominate the price list. However, the Sport is about 38 mille cheaper than the ‘big’ Range Rover. That price difference is not necessarily reflected in the equipment level of the base version.
Range Rover Sport P440e S
€104,549
Anyone who opens the Range Rover Sport configurator for the first time can be overwhelmed by the amount of available versions. There are six in total: S, SE, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE, Autobiography and First Edition. The latter two versions are only reserved for the most powerful powertrains: the plug-in hybrid P510e and the P530 with 4.4 V8. The basic version ‘S’ is only available in combination with the P440e, diesels are only available as SE and Dynamic SE. The only diesel engine on the price list is the 300 hp D300.
The P440e S is in the spotlights in this section. Where the plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport previously had a four-cylinder petrol engine under the hood, it is now a 3.0 six-in-line. The P440e has a system power of, yes, 440 hp and 560 Nm. With that power, the 2,735-kilogram colossus sprints to a speed of 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and has a top speed of 225 km/h. The battery pack has a net capacity of 31.8 kWh, with which you should be able to cover 114 electric kilometers according to the WLTP range. Towing a caravan or heavy trailer is no problem, because the P440e can tow a maximum of 3,000 kilos when braked.
Plastic
The base version of the Range Rover Sport is first and foremost recognizable by its 20-inch alloy wheels. They look smaller in the photos than the size suggests. As an option, you can of course opt for larger wheels. The lower edge of the bumpers of the S are made of black plastic, while the front bumper still has a silver-colored bottom protector. It is only from the Dynamic SE that the bumpers are completely finished in the body color. At the rear, the Range Rover Sport is distinguished not only by the Range Rover’s horizontal rear light units, but also by the visible rectangular exhausts. They are always there, on the Range Rover they are just hidden.
Land Rover paints the Range Rover Sport in Fuji White as standard. For an additional fee of €1,222 you can choose from seven metallic paints, for €2,374 the SUV rolls out of the spray booth in a ‘premium metallic paint’. If that is not exclusive enough, you can choose the Eiger Gray color from the SV color palette for €9,127. The Range Rover Sport also has standard LED headlights with High Beam Assist and LED taillights with dynamic indicators. ‘Pixel LED headlights’, Land Rover’s matrix LED, cost €1,068. Other features that are standard on the S are a light and rain sensor, Keyless Entry, electrically folding and automatically dimming door mirrors and parking sensors all around with a 360-degree camera.
Inverted world
In the interior, as a driver, you look out on a 13.7-inch digital instrumentation and a 13.7-inch touchscreen on which the Pivi Pro infotainment system runs. Integrated navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included. You can leave the telephone cord at home anyway, because a wireless telephone charger is also included. In the basic version, music lovers can have all their fun with the 14-speaker Meridian audio system, which has a power of 400 Watts. Below the touchscreen is the control for the two-zone climate control, a little further down is the rotary knob for the Terrain Response 2 system, which is also already present on the S.
You will not find cloth upholstery in the interior of the Range Rover Sport. The front seats are also standard 12-way electrically adjustable, seat heating is also always on. The overall furniture is upholstered in black leather, at no extra cost you can also choose from light gray leather. Do you still want fabric upholstery? Then that is also possible, although you have to pay €2,313 for the ‘Full Non-leather Upgrade’ and seat covers in ‘Ultrafabrics’. On the center console and in the doors are moldings of brushed aluminum, for €493 you can also choose from two types of wood veneer. The choice is huge.
In terms of safety systems, it is also not exactly forgoing in the Range Rover Sport with Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Assist, Rear Traffic Monitor, Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition with the – now legally required – Adaptive Speed Limiter. Adaptive cruise control is not there again, that is only standard from the SE. On the S, you can check it off the option list as part of the $1,169 ‘Driver Assist Pack’. Other packages available include the ‘Cold Climate Pack’ for €568 (heatable windscreen, windscreen washers and steering wheel rim), the ‘Hot Climate Pack’ for €3,133 (Privacy Glass, additional heat-insulating windscreen, cooled storage compartment in the center console, 4 zone climate control) and the Technology Pack for €1,881 (digital rear-view mirror, 230V socket and head-up display).
Value for your money?
So there is still plenty to check and order on the new Range Rover Sport, but as standard it is definitely not bad in its equipment for its base price. In comparison: the less powerful Mercedes-Benz GLE 350e is on the price list for at least 90 grand, but to get to the same equipment level as the Range Rover Sport you quickly go over the base price of the Briton. Also compared to the larger Range Rover, the equipment of the Range Rover Sport is absolutely not scanty, especially if you take the price difference into account.
