For Red Bull it may still seem a matter of maintaining the current form to win both world titles this year, but it apparently thinks otherwise. In Formula 1, the development of the cars often continues until the last race of the year. Especially now that we are at the beginning of a completely new era, it is worth it. The Red Bull RB18 still struggles with a somewhat high weight and that is why Red Bull now seems to want to make a particularly complex change.
According to the generally well-informed Auto, Motor und Sport the RB18 gets an all-new and lighter monocoque. A costly investment, especially since this basis has to be made for three cars. The two cars of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez respectively and a spare chassis. The new monocoque must also be crash tested by the FIA ​​to see if it is safe enough. All in all, quite a drastic operation, which quickly costs about 2 million euros.
In light of the budget cap, it is special that Red Bull goes this far. Apparently there is still enough room for investment. It is a step that, if it works out well, can yield a significant advantage. The racing stable expects a time gain of about two to three tenths per lap, understand AMuS. Red Bull cannot only benefit from it this year, because next year’s RB19 will most likely just be a further development of the current car.
