‘snarls’

Young people often get into illegal taxis, according to research by youth organization TeamAlert. About a quarter of young people sometimes ride with a ‘snorder’, someone in the car who unofficially takes taxi rides.
Illegal taxis, also known as ‘snorders’, are very popular with young people. According to TeamAlert, a quarter of the 980 young people surveyed indicate that they sometimes get into such a taxi. The main reason is that these ‘black taxis’ are cheaper than official taxis. A second third of the young people indicate that they have never been in a taxi like this, the rest are not sure. The majority of young people who occasionally take such a taxi have used an illegal taxi several times in the past five years. According to TeamAlert, there is a ‘small group’ of young people who regularly travel with such taxis.
Such an illegal taxi is not without risks, TeamAlert warns. After all, they are often uninsured and can be unreliable. Young people say they are aware of this, but are still persuaded by the lower costs. Some of the young people also say they personally know such ‘snorers’ and therefore have no problems with them. TeamAlert now wants to make young people more aware of the phenomenon and the dangers through a project. The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate is also working with the police to tackle illegal taxis.
