Get ‘cheap’ diesel

German ‘fuel tourists’ in Dutch border region

This year many Dutch ‘fuel tourists’ briefly crossed the border for cheaper fuel, but now the roles have been reversed. At the German border, a gas station operator notices that many Germans come to refuel here in the Netherlands.

It paid off for a long time to go to Germany or Belgium for cheaper fuel, but now that the excise duty reduction in Germany is being reversed on 1 September and diesel is already expensive there, the Germans are coming here. This is noticed by, among others, pump owner Louis Roeleveld from Denekamp. Opposite it AD he explains that there are ‘rows of Germans’ who come to refuel with diesel. Roeleveld is counting on the fact that as of September 1, diesel just across the border will be about 17 cents more expensive than at his pump in the Netherlands. Now it saves 11 cents. As of September 1, he expects even more ‘fuel tourists’ from across the border.

After a bad period for the gas station operators in the Dutch border regions, it is expected that things will improve further at the German border due to the abolition of the excise duty reduction. Not only when it comes to foreign customers. Roeleveld: “Certainly, I expect 100 percent that Dutch customers will come back soon.” After all, it pays less quickly to cross the border, so diesel is often cheaper here in the Netherlands, even now.
