The French will soon be able to lease an EV for 100 euros

The French government wants to get more people into an electric car by making leasing as attractive as possible. Leasing an EV should soon be possible for €100 per month.

Many European countries are trying to make electric cars more financially attractive with subsidies. In the Netherlands this year we had the €3,350 purchase subsidy for new electric cars up to €45,000, which could also be used for private leasing of an EV. In France they went a step further, because the purchase subsidy could amount to €6,000. That has been slightly reduced since 1 July, so that the French can now receive a maximum of €5,000 in subsidy. However, a new plan is already in the works to fuel the EV market. The French government wants people to be able to lease an EV for €100 per month.

French ‘budget’ minister, Gabriel Attal, announces to LCIA indicated that the government wants to set up a subsidy device as soon as possible to make this possible. According to him, EVs are currently “still very expensive” despite the existing subsidy. However, an amount of €100 per month should be doable for a large part of the French. Moreover, according to Attal, people will then spend less each month on leasing an EV than they currently spend on petrol.

It is not yet entirely clear how it will work exactly and what the conditions are. There are already electric cars in France to lease for just over €100 per month, such as the Dacia Spring. Then you immediately have a long-term contract with a fairly limited mileage per year. To make it attractive enough, the French government will probably also have to subsidize a significant discount on more attractive lease contracts that currently cost well over €100 per month.
