Small crossover Honda disappoints in NCAP crash tests

Recent Hondas such as the Jazz, HR-V and electric E invariably earn four or five NCAP stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. In this article a Honda plays the leading role that returns home with a significantly less attractive NCAP score.

The South and Central American branch of the Global NCAP has driven a Honda that we do not know in Europe at all. It concerns the WR-V, a compact crossover produced in India and Brazil based on the previous generation HR-V. The WR-V appeared in 2017 and went under the knife in 2020. With its length of exactly 4 meters and wheelbase of 2.55 meters, the WR-V is considerably smaller than the HR-V. It is 4.3 meters in fact thirty centimeters longer than its smaller brother. You may not have to worry too much about the fact that Honda never brought the WR-V to Europe. The WR-V received only one star during tight tests by Latin NCAP.

In terms of adult occupant safety, the WR-V scored only 41.03 percent of achievable points. Child safety in the car was rated with only 40.66 percent of the maximum score. In terms of pedestrian safety, the WR-V scored 58.82 percent better. The WR-V’s safety systems received 48.84 percent of the points.

Latin NCAP is unhappy about the absence of curtain airbags and the quality of the seat belts. Although the Honda WR-V has two airbags in the front, the passenger airbag cannot be switched off, resulting in a low score for child safety on board. Latin NCAP urges Honda to take a closer look at the WR-V and score 5 stars ‘once again’. The last time a Honda was rated with 5 stars by Latin NCAP was in 2015 (HR-V, City and Jazz). However, the WR-V dates from a time when Latin NCAP had other safety requirements. In 2016, the body introduced stricter assessment criteria.
