Toyota is closing a factory in Russia for good. Production there ended shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine, but the Russian factory is now closing permanently.
In March, Toyota shut down a Russian car factory near St. Petersburg because it would no longer be possible to build cars there due to supply disruptions. Since then, no more cars have been built, but as it turns out, that will no longer happen. Reuters reports that the factory is closing permanently. Imports of Toyota products were also ended in the spring, so that the presence of the Japanese car giant is now reduced to a minimum. Toyota will comply with all current obligations and will continue to provide service to existing customers through its existing dealers, but that’s about it. If it gradually becomes more and more difficult to get a Toyota, this will also be reflected in the sales figures. In an already more than halved market, Toyota was still in fifth place in the sales ranking in the first half of this year, it turned out in July.
The Russian Toyota plant was opened in 2007. Every year 100,000 cars could be built, which have been of the Camry (from the beginning) or RAV4 (from 2016) type throughout the history of this establishment. According to Automotive News Europe, the cars were mainly intended for the Russian market and a handful of countries nearby. That may have made the decision to close the tent a bit easier.
