For kindergarten cooking we want to make chocolate and fill it in PET jars (which I can obtain through my work and which we use for filling hair gel). But is this safe, ie will the material not melt or be toxic?
How many degrees can the chocolate have?
Please answer as soon as possible…
Answer
I would be careful.
The melting temperature of PET is something around 260°C, so that’s not an immediate problem, but PET can contain a substance (acetaldehyde) that can give an aftertaste. This substance occurs naturally in fruit and is harmless. Your hair gel will not be affected, but your chocolate may have an aftertaste. Although the taste and smell of the chocolate can be too strong to notice.
