How many times does your heart beat per minute when you are sleeping without dreaming?

Asker: MARGOT, 10 years old

Answer

Dear Margot,

It is of course difficult to count your heart rate when you are in deep sleep, but with special devices we can measure what the heart does when you are completely at rest. When you are an adult, your heart beats between 60 and 90 beats per minute at rest. With exertion this can sometimes rise to 200 beats per minute (this depends on the age, the younger the higher).

When you sleep, your heart rate slows down, in normal people to 50-70 beats per minute. If you are a top athlete this can sometimes go up to 25-30 beats per minute! Fortunately, the heart speeds up as soon as we wake up.
