Production removed from Born
The BMW Group has taken deep into its pockets to remove its production from the Dutch VDL Nedcar. It paid tens of millions of euros in compensation for the early termination of the production deal with VDL.
In October 2020, a shock went through Born in Limburg when it became known that the BMW Group tore up the production contract with VDL Nedcar. After BMW announced earlier that year that it did not want to house the production of the new X1 in Born, it turned out that the Mini production will also end after 2023.
The comments from VDL Nedcar at the time already showed that this decision was somewhat unexpected, because talks about the future were still going on. In fact, there was already a production contract until 2030, so there was a breach of contract. For this, the BMW Group has put an enormous compensation on the table. The Limburger today announces that the BMW Group already paid no less than €49 million in compensation to VDL Nedcar last year.
Such an amount is of course very welcome for VDL Nedcar, which officially still has no new client in case the production of BMW and Mini ceases. It was recently announced that the production stop is four months later than originally expected. It was supposed to end on November 1, 2023, now the deadline has been moved to March 1, 2024.
