Mercedes-Benz 280 S Enthusiast Wanted

A real S-class in Enthusiast Wanted! One with a somewhat insignificant history and – apparently – a number of points of interest. However, this is offset by a low asking price, low fixed costs and low fuel costs. Who dares?

Until 2012, when cars were already tax-free when they passed the age of 25, cheap driving and an old Mercedes-Benz went hand in hand. After two gap years in which there were plans to slowly increase the age for tax exemption, that age limit went up to 40 in one fell swoop in 2014. Since then, a lot of older Mercedes that were not yet allowed to count themselves among the over 40s were exported, but not this one.

Where the cheap-to-drive Mercedes were mainly diesels before 2012, this one is equipped with an LPG installation. And that makes you smile at the pump. The potentially low running costs of this S-Class are therefore the main reason why we highlight it here today. Not only do you have to deal with low liter prices as a result of the LPG installation, the car is also (because 40+ years old) mrb-free and it no longer needs the MOT from 2024 – because then it is even 50+ years old.

This S of generation W116 dates from 1974 and is therefore of the first generation Mercedes S-class, which was actually called S-class. The 2.7-liter zespitter in the nose served as the basic motorization at the time, and with 156 hp at 1,668 kg, it is probably adequate, but no more than that. It is to be hoped that the majority of the horses are still present at all, because not every engine thrives on LPG. However, the advertiser of this car indicates that it still drives well.

rust brown

But that’s where the information provided ends. The displayed mileage of 240,179 kilometers is not correct according to the advertisement, but what it should be remains unknown. The brown limo clearly has a long life behind it, but overall it doesn’t look too bad. If you can live with a few rust spots (for the MOT they won’t be a problem in two years anyway), then you can at least leave them alone. As far as we are concerned, it is a good sign that the seller simply puts them neatly in the picture and does not photograph around them. The interior, which still looks quite nice, only needs a few new parts to look chic again.

The interior still looks pretty good except for a few defective or missing parts.

Furthermore, it is hoped that the LPG installation is still in good condition, because that means that this car could be really cheap to drive. In any case, it is not even half as old as the car, because the S was imported in 1999 and the LPG installation comes from a Dutch installer.

In short: with two right hands, a little luck, love and guts (and a few thousand euros in reserve) you could just drive around relatively cheaply with this for years to come. And then nice in a brown S-class, which you bought for €3,500. Who does that to you?
