40 percent of new Mercedes-Benz cars go to China

Mercedes-Benz has announced its sales figures for the past quarter. The sales growth in China is particularly striking, as is the share of the Chinese market in the total sales numbers.

China is an extremely important market for many European (luxury) brands, including Mercedes-Benz. This is evident from the most recent sales figures. In the third quarter of this year, Mercedes-Benz sold no fewer than 206,800 cars in China. That is 37 percent more than last year in the same quarter and accounts for about 40 percent of total sales (517,800 cars). Looking at the whole year so far, the Chinese market amounts to about 37 percent of Mercedes’ sales. This makes it the largest sales market for the brand. In fact, Asia as a whole accounts for almost half of all sales.

Sales in China may pick up even further as the country slowly but surely appears to be making a comeback after prolonged lockdowns due to the coronavirus. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz is facing a new challenge closer to home. Due to the high energy prices, it is forced to take measures. It is said that it is possible to halve gas consumption without reducing production. This is very important to Mercedes, because to date Mercedes-Benz has sold 6 percent fewer cars this year than in the already challenging 2021.
