These are the Volkswagen Group’s most popular EVs

Volkswagen has a rousing press release about the electric sales figures, which have increased compared to last year. However, we find it especially interesting which worldwide are the most popular electric models of the group, because this makes it clear where the large numbers can be found worldwide.

No surprise: we have to look for those numbers in the SUVs. The combination Volkswagen ID4/Volkswagen ID5, presented as one model, accounted for 122,600 cars in the first nine months of 2022. This is by far the most popular model, which is undoubtedly partly due to the fact that the ID4 is sold in Europe, China and North America. The smaller ID3 does without the latter market and is less popular as a hatchback outside Europe anyway. In nine months, 45,500 were sold, making the ID3 still the group’s second electric model. He is followed by the crowd favorite of the Netherlands, the Skoda Enyaq (36,900).

After that it stays interesting. At Audi, it is not the more compact, more affordable Q4 E-tron, but the larger Audi E-Tron the most popular EV. Audi sold 29,700, against 27,500 Q4s. Both SUVs therefore remain the Volkswagen ID6, which still delivered 27,500 orders in and around China. This is followed by the Porsche Taycan, which in all its manifestations was good for 25,100 copies. Closer in Volkswagen’s electric list is the Cupra Born. Cupra focuses on Europe and therefore fishes in a somewhat smaller pond, which is reflected in the sales figures.

Then let’s talk about what Volkswagen actually wanted to say: the group sold 25 percent more EVs in the first three quarters of 2022 than in the same period last year. The share of EVs in total sales rose from 4.2 to 6 percent. At a country level, China is the largest buyer with 112,700 EVs, but if we look at regions, Europe leads the way with 211,900 units.

Total sales, including other powered cars, were 10 percent higher in the third quarter. Still, things do not look good for Volkswagen for 2022, because the German company still sold a total of 12.9 percent less than in the same period last year, according to Reuters.
