Why do some people develop back hair while others remain completely hairless?

I am a 19 year old dude and my back is starting to show very clear and ample hair growth from the neck down to the bottom of my back. When I see all my classmates during swim training at school, they all have very smooth backs. How come? I mean… I also thought it was hereditary, but… My father, for example, also has a lot of back hair, but his brothers and father are very hairless. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from getting worse?

Answer

Having back hair is indeed genetically determined. This is not to say that everyone in your family should have that trait. After all, you always have two copies of a gene, one from your mother and one from your father. Depending on which copies you have received from both parents, a characteristic may or may not be expressed in you, this is the case for back hair, but also, for example, for the color of your eyes.

I don’t think there’s much you can do to prevent it from getting worse, but there are always options to remove hair.
