Tire technology is being developed on the track

Motorsport has always been a breeding ground for technological developments that eventually find their way into production cars. And perhaps without realizing it immediately, the motorist benefits from this. Tires play a vital role on the track and, of course, on the road. Hankook signed a partnership contract with Formula E and at the same time presents a winter tire that has been specially developed for the electric car: the Hankook iON Winter.

Nowhere are such high demands placed on technology as in motorsport, especially in its premier league, such as Formula 1 and DTM. For a few years now, F1 has had a whisper-quiet, but at least as exciting, equivalent in the form of Formula E. Dutch driver Robin Frijns will also be back at the start in the 2023 season in a total of 18 races. From then on Hankook the technical partner and tire supplier of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, as it is called in full.

Close collaboration with race teams

The tires of the super-fast Formula E cars have to meet extremely high requirements. First of all, of course, they have to offer maximum grip during acceleration, braking and cornering when driving on the cutting edge. But the lifespan and rolling resistance are also crucial. The Hankook technical team works very closely with the racing teams and the drivers. All the innovation and data resulting from testing and racing is invaluable and is also used by Hankook to develop tires for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Evolved for better performance

More electric kilometers with the Hankook iON evo

The electrification that we see on the circuit with Formula E has been taking place on public roads for much longer, where more and more electric cars are driving. This makes our mobility cleaner and quieter, which contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Hankook developed the iON evo especially for the electric car with its high torque, which we can safely see as the evolution of the car tyre. Important characteristics of this tire are the low rolling resistance, the low noise level and low distortion due to the higher load-carrying capacity. The latter is related to the higher weight of an electric car.

After the successful introduction of the Hankook iON evo, there is now the Hankook iON Winter. The development of this tire presented an even greater challenge to Hankook engineers, but the result is worth seeing. The Hankook iON Winter excels on wet roads and in snow. This winter tire manages to combine its performance with low rolling noise thanks to Hankook’s Sound Absorber™ technology and low rolling resistance, for more electric kilometers in the cold seasons.

Sustainable production, Evolution

Tire development at Hankook keeps pace with the change in the vehicle fleet, which has already manifested itself in recent years in tires specially optimized for electromobility for Audi, BMW, Porsche and Tesla, among others. The new Hankook iON evo takes the next step and the Hankook iON Winter completes the range. Hankook received the ‘S&P Global Gold Class’ award and is in the highest one percent of the EcoVadis sustainability ratings, even more reason to choose the new iON series as a tire for an electric car.
