Tesla Model Y is Europe’s best-selling car

Convincing number 1

Tesla Model Y is Europe’s best-selling car

The European car sales figures for September of this year are complete. This shows that the market has grown slightly again, just like last month. Tesla leads the rankings with its Model Y: it is currently the best-selling car in Europe.

In September, 1,038,481 cars were sold in Europe, according to figures from market analyst Jato. That is 7.5 percent more than in September last year. Despite this, sales for the whole of Q3 2022 are comparable to the same period in 2021: around 2.65 million cars were delivered. Quite a large number, were it not for the fact that there were a lot more. For example, the Q3s of 2019 and 2020 accounted for 3.66 and 3.44 million European sales respectively. Jato says that a decrease of one million cars per quarter is poignant, but most manufacturers have now adjusted to the lower volumes. In comparison, some 12 million cars were sold on this continent in the first nine months of 2019. The 8,182,818 copies of the first three quarters of this year are therefore good for a decrease of no less than 32 percent.

Fully electric growing

Total sales of fully electric cars increased in September compared to last year, by about 15 percent. In addition, 15.6 percent of new cars sold in Europe are now fully electric cars. Norway, the country where the most EVs are sold in relative terms, saw a decline in EV sales. However, there was an increase in Germany, France and the United Kingdom – much larger markets. 60 percent of EVs sold in Europe find a buyer in one of those three markets.

Tesla in particular writes strong September figures, although Jato does add that the Americans often do relatively well in the last month of a quarter. Although Model 3 sales fell by 50 percent, the burgeoning German production of the Tesla Model Y made up for that: The Model Y was by far the best-selling car in Europe in September. 3 percent of new cars in September were Model Y. In the American and Chinese markets, it already overtook the Model 3 as the most popular BEV, and now in Europe as well. In Germany it was even better sold than the Volkswagen Golf, which with 16,042 units is good for seventh place on the European September lists.
