The Hyundai Motor Group has started construction of a new factory in the US state of Georgia, which will produce EVs and battery packs from 2025.
Hyundai’s new plant in Bryan County, Georgia is referred to by Hyundai as the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, HMGMA for short. The location is to start producing electric cars from the first half of 2025 and has a capacity of 300,000 units per year. Hyundai is investing $5.54 billion, more or less the same amount in euros, in the construction of the project. In this context, ‘Hyundai’ does not mean the brand, but the company. That means that Kia and Genesis cars can and will also be built in Georgia. The opening of the factory is expected to create 8,100 jobs in the region.
The extra capacity is desperately needed if Hyundai is to achieve its EV ambitions. By 2030, the Korean company wants to sell 3.23 million fully electric cars annually, and they have to be made somewhere. Hyundai is certainly not the first foreign car manufacturer to invest heavily in the United States for this reason. BMW previously announced a major expansion in Spartanburg, while Mercedes in Alabama produces the EQE SUV and EQS SUV, including battery packs.
