Max Verstappen takes pole position in Mexico

Max Verstappen starts the Mexican Grand Prix from the first place on the grid. The world champion clocked the fastest time by a margin, where it seemed to get a lot tighter at the front earlier.

In a qualifying in which it seemed to still be between six drivers in Q2, Max Verstappen came out as the fastest with a margin of three tenths. The two-time world champion was ahead of the two Mercedes drivers. George Russell (P2) seemed to have a shot at pole, but was unable to finish his last lap. Lewis Hamilton eventually clocked the third fastest time. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez could not take more than fourth starting place in his home country.

The Ferraris suddenly faced more grip problems in Q3 and were stuck in P5 and P7. Carlos Sainz was the fastest of the two, Charles Leclerc has to settle for a disappointing seventh place. Valtteri Bottas has been very fast all through qualifying with his Alfa Romeo and will take sixth place tomorrow.

The Mexican Grand Prix starts on Sunday at 9 p.m. (Dutch time).
