Watch out during the winter months
In parts of France you can get a ticket from this month if you don’t have the right tires on your car during the winter months. In this way, France is in a sense following the policy that already applies in Germany, Austria and Luxembourg.
If you are crossing the border in the coming months, it would be a good idea to check the rules regarding tires in winter. You may already know that in Germany winter conditions require tires that have been developed for this purpose. These can be winter tires, but also tires with the M+S symbol (mud + snow). This has also been the case in France since last year, but from 1 November 2022 this will actually be enforced.
More specifically, you should fit tires with the M+S logo, or carry at least two chains or two tire socks in the trunk. Genuine winter tires with the 3PMSF symbol (three mountains and a snowflake) are also allowed, but not mandatory. The rule applies to passenger cars and commercial vehicles, campers, trucks and coaches and the fine is 135 euros. It is not mandatory everywhere in France to comply with this.
