For ICE, HEV and PHEV powertrains
Renault and Geely jointly establish a new company in powertrains with an internal combustion engine. It should develop and build ‘high-efficiency’ combustion engines and hybrid powertrains for all of their own brands and possibly others.
At the end of August we wrote about Geely’s possible intentions to buy into Renault’s fuel engine division. Both companies would get 40 percent of it and an undisclosed oil company the other 20 percent. Now it appears that the fork is different: Renault and Geely together start a new company for the development and construction of mainly combustion engines, of which they both own 50 percent.
Five million engines a year
It should become a ‘leading powertrain technology company’, for which the plans are not wrong. It is not yet known when they should all be completed. But once that’s done, the two claim we’ll be dealing with a company that consists of 17 engine factories and five development centers across three continents. Together they must provide employment for 19,000 employees and annually produce more than 5 million ICE, HEV or PHEV powertrains for more than 130 markets. We do not expect that these will be all new facilities. The collaboration may make use of some of the existing Renault and/or Geely factories.
There is not yet a name for the new joint venture. However, the first names for which the company will produce powertrains are already known – and not surprisingly. The products will soon end up not only in cars from Renault, Dacia, Geely, Volvo, Lynk & Co and Proton, but also in those of Nissan and Mitsubishi. The intention is to also build power units for other car manufacturers. The duo wants to have something to offer ‘for 80 percent of the global ICE market’. When it comes to passenger cars, it may disappear in Europe and the US, but it is expected to be important worldwide for many years to come.
