Diesel was always cheaper than petrol, but in recent months that was no longer the case for the first time. Due to the upcoming EU boycott on Russian oil, which will take effect from December 5, diesel prices have risen sharply in recent times. This was because fuel producers wanted to increase their stocks in the run-up to the boycott, while Russian oil, which is often used for diesel production, became scarcer. As a result, the producers were temporarily faced with significantly higher costs. Now that they have finished preparing for the boycott, those extra costs will disappear and diesel prices will drop again.
Today, the suggested retail price is again the same as that of petrol: €2.12 per litre. Although the rates of gas stations are often lower than the recommended retail price, diesel will initially be even more expensive than petrol. Gas station owners first want to sell the previously purchased more expensive diesel at a price that they believe is sufficiently high before they let the price drop at the pump. Paul van Selms of UnitedConsumers tells nu.nl that he expects that the price for a liter of diesel will soon be even lower than that for a liter of petrol.
