‘Year ahead of schedule’

A modest party in Wolfsburg today: Volkswagen has reached a milestone with its electric ID models. The brand has already sold half a million of them worldwide and it succeeded earlier than expected.
The trays of home-made curry sausages are probably going around Wolfsburg today, because there is a party to celebrate. Since the start of delivery of the Volkswagen ID3 in October 2020, Volkswagen has already delivered half a million fully electric ID models worldwide. According to Volkswagen, this is a year ahead of schedule. The Germans do not disclose what the sales distribution of the models is. Logically, the majority of the supplied IDs is an ID3. After all, it has been on the market the longest and is more affordable than the ID4 and ID5.
Speaking of that ID3; according to Volkswagen, the queue for the electric Golf alternative is growing considerably. That is not really positive news, even if the manufacturer sees it mainly as a good sign that the model is so popular. Volkswagen says it currently has 135,000 ID3s on order and is “doing everything it can to deliver them as quickly as possible.” In the Netherlands, the Volkswagen ID3 is also the most popular ID: more than 14,000 of these have been sold to date. The ID4 follows with just 8,500 units, of the ID5 only just 500 have been sold.
The ID range now consists of four models: ID3, ID4, ID5, ID6 (China) and ID Buzz. More will be added in the near future. For example, the ID Aero is in the barrel, a Passat alternative that Volkswagen describes as the ‘flagship’ of the IDs. There is also an extension at the bottom of the offer. There will be a more affordable model, possibly called ID1, with a target price of around €25,000. That will be a compact crossover that Seat will build in Spain, side by side with a Skoda and Cupra equivalent. Volkswagen is also working on a compact hatchback under the ID3 and a long-legged brother parallel to the ID3.
