Does charging often take you too long? Then there is now an interesting Swiss invention that may ease the loading pain. Plug-in hybrids with a relatively small battery pack in particular seem to benefit from the innovation.
The Swiss start-up Morand says it has developed a new type of battery that can be filled with brand-new power at lightning speed. With the technology called eTechnology, a set of cells with a capacity of 7.2 kWh can be charged to 80 percent of its capacity in just 72 seconds. With a charging capacity of 360 kW, the 7.2 kWh was fully charged to 98 percent in 2 minutes. In 2.5 minutes of charging, the full 100 percent of the battery was reached.
Morand himself speaks of a hybrid storage system for which it uses supercapacitor cells, which means that lithium and cobalt are used to a lesser extent than with regular battery cells. It does contain lithium, but the bulk of eTechnolgy is made up of aluminum, graphene and carbon. The Swiss start-up links everything to smart software that controls everything. According to Morand, his eTechnology technology will also last longer than conventional batteries. According to the Swiss, eTechnology can handle ‘5 to 10 times’ as many charge cycles. A test battery has already survived 70,000 charge cycles.
Will you see eTechnology in electric cars? That’s just the question. Morand himself mainly speaks about the application of his technology in drones, electric bicycles, robots and electric scooters, but also in small electric city cars.
