Will Golf soon become ID Golf?
For the time being it was unclear how Volkswagen sees the future of the Golf. Earlier this year, the brand left it open whether there would be a new generation of Volkswagen Golf at all. Now the brand has made a decision. The Volkswagen Golf will continue to exist and as an EV, it also has a right to exist alongside the ID3.
The Golf has been one of Volkswagen’s best-known models for several decades, but until recently it was not clear how the Golf future will be shaped. In August, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer told the German newspaper Welt that the brand had not yet decided on the arrival of a new Golf after the current eighth generation is no longer available. Golf enthusiasts can breathe easy again: the Golf continues to exist.
Top man Thomas Schäfer says to the English Autocar that the brand would be crazy if the model name Golf disappears. The top driver says that the Golf will soon be fully electric and that the future electric Golf can easily coexist with the ID3. According to Schäfer, Volkswagen is also not abandoning the ID names, as the consumer is now well known with them. According to the CEO, the ID3 was never intended as a successor to the Volkswagen Golf and you should see the car more as an electric ‘Golf Plus’. An addition to the compact mid-sized car.
According to Thomas Schäfer, there is no future in which Volkswagen does not use the model name Golf or the GTI designation. Will there be an EV called a Golf next to the ID3? Not quite. According to the CEO, Volkswagen already proves with the ID Buzz that the ID naming can also be combined with a real model name instead of just a number. That would mean that Volkswagen could introduce an ‘ID Golf’ one step below the ID3.
The current eighth generation Golf was presented in 2019 and will receive a facelift in the not too distant future. The facelifted Golf is expected to last until around 2027.
