How can I use a geologic map to find quartz or other minerals?

And which rocks have the chance to form crystals? I myself live in Japan and as a hobby I look for crystals and minerals. I was wondering if I could use a geological map of rock types to find high concentrations of crystals. I mean what kind of rock is important? Patterns on the map? Points of contact between 2 rocks? Etc.

Dear Alex

To be able to estimate this on the basis of geological maps, you will soon need a course in geology. A few tips: crystals are often found in veins and pockets. Magmatic deep rocks are good candidates to start with. Especially pegmatites in granite offer good opportunities for finding certain crystals. You make it easier for yourself by purchasing a geological guide of the region. Many guides are published in Europe containing locations where you can find fossils and / or minerals. I suspect it’s no different in Japan. Good luck with your search!
