And four gearboxes!

Mercedes-Benz EQG will get four electric motors

The fully electric brother of the Mercedes-Benz G-class, the EQG, will have four electric motors and four gearboxes. This allows him to make a ‘G-turn’, which has been christened by Mercedes: a U-turn made on the spot by having the left wheels turn fully in the opposite direction to the right wheels.

The British Coach already took a tour with the Mercedes-Benz EQG: the fully electric variant of the G-class, which will be on the market in 2024. During that tour, they learned more about the technology of the electric G, which contains technologies not previously used by Mercedes-Benz.

Battery technology from EQXX

The brand already supplies four-wheel drive electric cars, including the EQE and EQS, but the EQG will be the first Mercedes with an electric motor per wheel. All four engines are linked to two-speed gearboxes, with both low and high ranges. Mercedes late Coach know that it is quite a complicated and expensive technology, but that they choose it anyway. The brand does this, because in this way the car does not need limited slip differentials to properly adjust the rotational speed of the wheels in the terrain. This is done with the EQG by means of software per electric motor and therefore per individual wheel.

The Mercedes-Benz EQG is built in the same factory as the regular G-class, but uses its own ladder chassis with a largely identical body. The brand places a new type of battery in the chassis that debuted in the extremely economical EQXX Concept: the so-called ‘silicon battery’. It would have a capacity of about 100 kWh, but due to a higher energy density it should be slightly lighter than the battery of the EQS with a comparable capacity. However, the EQG certainly does not promise to become a featherweight: how heavy it will be is not yet known. However, someone from Mercedes’ development department indicates that the car weighs less than 3,500 kg, fortunately. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz does not yet know whether the electric G will soon be available with a towbar.

Trick

The brand does give the EQG a party tricks along. After pressing the ‘G-turn’ button, you can spin the EQG on unpaved ground. The car does this by spinning its left wheels hard forward, while turning its right wheels backward at the same speed – or vice versa. Initially, Mercedes considered it unnecessary gimmickbut when it became apparent that it could come in handy in tight terrain situations, it decided to equip the EQG with it.

At least the EQG gets enough power to break traction despite the heavy weight. Various power variants are coming onto the market, with the strongest carrying an AMG label. The latter will be able to compete with the performance of the Mercedes-AMG G63 already on the market. The EQG will not hit the road until 2024.
