what is a condom and how does it work

what material is the condom made of, what lubricant is used for it, and how does it work against STDs and unwanted pregnancies?

Answer

Best,

Condoms are made from latex (from the rubber tree) or polyurethane (synthetic). It is stretchy, waterproof and wear-resistant, which means that fluids (vaginal fluid or semen) cannot penetrate. For STD, it therefore protects against infections that are carried with this fluid, such as HIV and gonorrhea. Sperm cells cannot pass through the latex and pregnancy is prevented in this way, yet 10-20% of couples who use condoms as contraception become pregnant within a year. A condom therefore never offers 100% protection against infections or pregnancy, but it is a very good way to prevent STDs during sexual contact.

Lubricants must be chosen with care, as some (mainly oils) can attack the latex and thus compromise the protection. A water-based lubricant is preferable.
