The Taiwanese Foxconn is doing well in the car world. After previous reports of collaborations with other car manufacturers, Foxconn is now also in talks with Volkswagen. The aim is to investigate whether it will produce the new Scout brand cars in the US.
Prepare for a lot of links, because this story deserves context. Foxconn is a Taiwanese contract manufacturer and electronics expert. We know the company from the production of iPhones, but in recent years the focus of the Taiwanese has shifted more and more to the car industry. After it became clear in 2019 that Foxconn wanted to invest its time and money there, the company has certainly not been idle. We learned from contracts with ‘newcomers’ Fisker and Lordstown, but also heard about collaborations with established names such as Geely and Stellantis. In the meantime, Foxconn has even presented its own electric cars under the name Foxtron, although the company’s focus will not be on its own brand.
According to Automobilwoche, it may just happen that Foxconn may also add Volkswagen to its impressive resume. Volkswagen is launching Scout in the United States, a new brand (with an old name) that should make tough, off-road-like EVs. Precisely that making could be outsourced to Foxconn, if the talks lead to the desired outcome for the Taiwanese.
The name of Magna Steyr is also mentioned. That Austrian company produces, among other things, the Mercedes-Benz G-class, the Toyota Supra, the BMW Z4 and some Jaguar-Land Rover products. However, ‘Magna’ has the desire to also get started in the US and could just enter into a partnership with Foxconn and Scout. The news does not go further than speculation at this stage, but given the raging rise of Foxconn, this new step can hardly be considered impossible.
