Vauxhall Astra Electric

Get to know the fully electric versions of the Opel Astra. The electric Opel Astra Electric is available as a hatchback and also as a practical Sports Tourer. You read that right: it is not called Astra-e but Astra Electric.

A few months after Opel pulled the curtain on the all-new Astra in the middle of last year, the brand announced that there would also be a fully electric version. It’s here now. This is the electric Opel Astra Electric. Those who do not find the regular hatchback spacious enough do not immediately have to switch to an EV from another manufacturer. There is also an electric Opel Astra Electric Sports Tourer! The name of the electric Astra is somewhat remarkable, as the electric versions of the Corsa and Mokka received an ‘-e’ after their model name.

The current generation Opel Astra is a real Stellantis child and so the model shares its technology with a number of other models from that huge family, including the DS 4 and the Peugeot 308. The electrical hardware that Opel puts in the Astra Electric does not come completely surprisingly, therefore very similar to the technology of the electric Peugeot e-308 presented earlier this year.

Specifications Opel Astra Electric

The electric Opel Astra Electric and Astra Electric Sports Tourer have a 54 kWh battery with a usable capacity of 51 kWh. The electric Astras come up to 416 kilometers away. The range of the Astra Electric is therefore 16 kilometers greater than the range of 400 kilometers that Peugeot communicated for the e-308. The electric Astras Electric have an 11 kW on-board charger. On a 100 kW fast charger, the battery pack can be charged to 80 percent of its capacity with power in about 30 minutes.

Just like in the e-308s, the front wheels in the electric Opel Astra Electric are driven by a 156 hp electric motor. The maximum torque is 270 Nm. The top speed of the Astra Electric is striking, which is not exactly low for an EV in a relatively conventional segment at 170 km / h.

Loading takes up loading space

The luggage space of the electric Astras is smaller than that of the versions with petrol or diesel engines. For example, the Astra Sports Tourer with combustion engine consumes 608 to 1,634 liters. With 516 liters, the electric Astra Electric Sports Tourer is already more than 90 liters less. If you throw the back seat flat, you can take 1,553 liters of stuff with you in the Astra Electric Sports Tourer. That’s 81 less.

For the time being, the MG 5 Electric is the only electric station wagon on the European market that you can actually buy. Next year, MG’s 5 Electric will be a lot less unique with the arrival of the electric Opel Astra, Peugeot 308 and the station versions thereof.

We do not yet have prices of the electric Opel Astra Electric. In the spring of 2023, Opel will open the order books.

Opel goes electric

The electric Astra is of course not the first, but certainly not the last electric Opel. The Rocks-e is the smallest member of Opel’s electric model range, which also includes the Corsa-e and Mokka-e. The electric Astra Electric is now added. From 2028, Opel will only sell electric cars in Europe.
