Is the measure to immediately remove pregnant laboratory technicians from the lab still relevant in this modern age where almost no manual tests are performed anymore?

in a modern lab, almost all tests are done on automatic machines, there is little or no contact with bodily fluids. The tests where this is still the case can be avoided. Is the stay alone harmful? What are the risks for pregnant women if we only have tests carried out where there is no contact with bodily fluids at all?

Answer

You’re right: removing pregnant women from high-risk professional environments is sometimes ridiculous. Much has to do with medical-legal responsibility: should something happen, the employer is responsible. That is why every occupational physician will play it 100% safe and will have the pregnant woman removed, while it is perfectly possible to have these pregnant women perform adapted tasks from an organizational point of view.
