Varied reactions
The majority of AutoWeek readers believe that road tax, or MRB for diesels, should be lowered. This is evident from the thousands of reactions to the statement ‘the road tax for diesel cars must be reduced’ that we recently presented to you.
AutoWeek regularly bombards you with provocative statements about various subjects. No less than almost 10,000 AutoWeek readers responded to the statement ‘the road tax for diesel cars must be lowered . Of the 9,928 people who responded, no less than 86 percent agreed with the statement that road tax for diesel cars should be reduced. 13 percent disagreed, while only one percent had no opinion on the amount of the MRB for diesel cars.
The statement we presented to the AutoWeek reader did not come out of the blue. He responded to the current high diesel prices. In the tail end of the summer, a liter of diesel was more expensive than a liter of petrol (E10) for the first time in Dutch history. Although the Average National Recommended Price of a liter of diesel is now below that of a liter of petrol, from a financial point of view it is still less attractive than before to drive a diesel car. There are many arguments to be made for or against lowering the road tax for diesels. One thinks a diesel engine simply has a nicer character, the other prefers to see the self-igniter disappear from the streets as soon as possible.
AutoWeek reader Racing Green believes that the mrb for modern diesel cars with an Adblue system should be lowered, since ‘these are very clean’. Racing Green even goes so far as to say that ‘diesel is the future’, resulting in a whole discussion. Furthermore, the reaction of AutoWeek reader L Baeke managed to loosen tongues. L Baeke believes that the high motor vehicle tax for diesel is justifiable because it aims to discourage the use of diesels for short distance driving. AutoWeek reader Wiseguy goes even further and says that road tax should be increased. ‘This is the time to further discourage diesel, because far too many imported diesels are entering the country. Discouraging is the best and also the only successful strategy for a better environment.’ Several site visitors found something of that as well.
