Reborn Borgward declared bankrupt

The classic Borgward, which you probably know mainly from the Isabella, returned in 2008 under Chinese-German leadership. At least, in that year Borgward Group AG was founded, a company involving the grandson of the original Borgward and the Chinese Foton Motor. Over the years, the reborn Borgward presented four crossovers and SUVs, but due to disappointing sales, the company did not exactly prosper. In April this year, Borgward filed for bankruptcy and now it has officially closed its gates.

The first car of the reborn Borgward was the BX7, a 4.71 meter long SUV with a blown 2.0 four-cylinder turbo engine. The BX3, BX5 and BX6 followed later. None of these crossovers managed to win the hearts of consumers. Not in China, but also not in countries like Germany and Ireland where Borgward tried to sell his models. According to the Chinese equivalent of the ACEA, the brand sold only about 8,700 cars in 2020 and only 3,350 last year. Borgward had its best sales year in 2019, when it sold around 45,000 cars.

There was never a production version of this Isabella Concept.

The last newcomer presented by Borgward was a study model: the Borgward Isaballa Concept. A production version of it never came. We dare to bet that the now bottled Borgward lives on in the memory to a lesser extent than the original brand.
