The Mercedes-Benz S-class was already available in numerous versions: from regular petrol versions to plug-ins and from diesels to a glimmer-laden Maybach version. Today we are introduced to the absolute sporty top version: the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance, a plug-in hybrid with more than 800 hp.

To date, the 612bhp 6.0 V12 powering the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has been the most powerful machine Mercedes-Benz has delivered in its top sedan, but a new horsepower ruler has emerged in the land of indulgence. Meet the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance, the sporty top version, of which the ‘E Performance’ part of the name already gives away that we are dealing with an executioner of a plug-in hybrid.

For the first time, the S63 AMG has a plug, but that is not very surprising. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door also has a mega-strong plug-in hybrid powertrain as the S63 SE Performance. In the S63 E Performance, however, the hardware is slightly different. Where the top version of the AMG GT 4-Door has a 639 hp V8, which together with a 204 hp electric motor is good for a system power of 843 hp and 1,470 Nm, the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance is slightly milder, although that is very relative. The top-S still claims the title of ‘strongest S-class ever’.

The Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance has a 4.0-liter V8 that generates 612 hp and 900 Nm. Together with a 190 hp and 320 Nm electric motor, this gives Mercedes’ non-electric top sedan – after all, there is also an EQS – a system power of 802 hp and 1,430 Nm. Still bizarre values. The sporty and four-wheel drive top-S, which weighs just under 2,600 kilos, hits 100 km / h in 3.3 seconds. Its top speed: 250 km/h, but it can optionally be increased to 290 km/h. Switching is done by means of an AMG Speedshift automatic transmission with nine gears.

The fact that the plug-in hybrid part of the powertrain is mainly aimed at extra sporty performance is evident from the electric range. The Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance squeezes 33 electric kilometers from its 13.1 kWh battery. In comparison: the plug-in hybrid S450e and S580e have a 28.6 kWh battery that allows a range of up to 114 kilometers. Plugging around is possible, but in moderation. The battery pack is considerably larger than in the AMG GT 4-Door E Performance. It contains a 6.1 kWh battery with which you can only zoom around electrically for 12 kilometers.

AMG

Of course, the top-S is crammed with high tech AMG stuff. For example, the S63 AMG has active roll stabilization and a co-steering and counter-steering rear axle. AMG Ride Control+ baptized adaptive air suspension? From the party.

For the first time, the S-class is also available in AMG 63 trim with a typical AMG grille with vertical slats. The muscular battleship stands on 21-inch light metal and of course has the AMG signature four angular tailpipes at the bottom of its buttocks. All around, the top-S is of course again in a relatively subtle way filled with external extras. The interior is covered with materials such as nappa leather down to the smallest nooks and crannies. The steering wheel also comes specifically from the AMG stable. There are no less than seven driving modes to choose from: Electric, Comfort, Battery Hold, Sport, Sport+, Slippery and Individual.

We do not yet know when the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance will come to the Netherlands and what it will cost.
