Honda Type R, Peugeot 408 and a Borgward Isabella
AutoWeek 49 is for sale in stores from Wednesday or you can expect it in your mailbox this week. In this issue we drive, among other things, the Peugeot 408, which has a lot of the 308, but looks and feels very different. Two top-class plug-in hybrids play the leading role in our double test: the Range Rover P440e competes against the Porsche Cayenne Coupé. On the Rolling Bench we meet an old Borgward Isabella.
We kick off with the double test that adorns the cover this week. The Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne each operate in their own universe, but when it comes to drive technology, there are parallels, especially as a PHEV with a full battery. But what does the world look like when the battery is empty? Who then shows real character?
It’s code red on all sides in the hot hatch segment. On the one hand because the genre is threatened with extinction, on the other hand because Honda introduces perhaps the best hot hatch the world has ever seen with the new Civic Type R. Are we really saying that? Yes, we really say that. We can say that our first drive in the new Civic Type R was impressive.
Less impressive, but certainly striking, were the first kilometers we made with the Peugeot 408. In many ways, the 408 is very similar to the 308, with which it shares its base, but once you get on the road, it is quite a different car. Marco Gorter catches up with you.
It’s a pity, but the Borgward brand has pretty much disappeared from collective memory. This also applies to the reborn Borgward, which is now really bankrupt. Fortunately, we meet Erik Born who still owns one. It was his first car in 1986, but he only recently got around to restoring it. It’s going on the dynamometer, so let’s see if the engine does what it’s supposed to do.
This week in Klokje Rond we have a car that does not have a very good name: a Peugeot 407. In 2011, Peter Hofman from Lisse bought a used 407 SW HDiF with automatic transmission, with 178,000 km on the clock at the time. Now he has added more than 3 tons, so he made a good buy at the time, right? That’s not the whole story, of course.
