Are there risks to pregnancy when both partners have blood group A negative?

Asker: Sabrina, 25 years old

Answer

Best,

The blood groups can be combined without any problem. Since you are negative yourself and the baby is too anyway, this is without risk.

If the mother has a Rh negative blood group and the father is Rh positive, there is a chance that the baby will also be Rh positive. In that case, the mother can produce antibodies against the baby’s blood and, in subsequent pregnancies, develop a serious immune reaction to the baby’s (Rs positive) blood. That baby can then develop severe anemia, because the mother’s antibodies will break down the blood.

Kind regards,
