What is Menopause?

I know that women have menopause, but what does that mean?

Answer

Dear Jeanine,

Menopause is the last menstrual period in a woman’s life. so it’s a moment. (the moment of the very first menstruation is called the menarche)

You have the period before the menopause, in which the woman menstruates somewhat regularly. This is because the brain stimulates the ovaries to produce an egg and prepares the uterus for pregnancy, but if the woman does not become pregnant, the uterus will shed the built-up mucous membrane (= menstruation).

You also have the period after menopause, when the eggs in the ovaries are “empty” and there is no longer any hormonal stimulation of the uterus. As a result, no mucous membrane will be built up for a possible pregnancy. The loss of the hormones normally produced by the ovary can cause various complaints in the woman, such as hot flashes (vapors), skin aging, …

kind regards,
