Stellantis wants to buy into Symbio, the company that is already responsible for the hydrogen technology on board the delivery vans with ‘Hydrogen’ in the type name.
Symbio has so far been a joint venture of Michelin and Faurecia, a French supplier to the automotive industry. Symbio focuses on the development of hydrogen systems for ‘light and heavy’ vehicles and that does not stop at theory. For example, the Stellantis hydrogen buses, namely the Citroën ë-Jumpy Hydrogen and the Peugeot e-Expert Hydrogen and Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen, which are similar to that car, are also equipped with Symbio technology. We also encounter the company at competitor Renault, also with electric commercial vehicles converted into hydrogen drinkers.
Whether Symbio will continue to work with Renault in the future remains to be seen, as Stellantis is aiming for ‘a substantial share’ in the existing joint venture. That is not a rumor, but something that the American/French/Italian car giant itself announces. According to CEO Carlos Tavares, Symbio’s plans fit seamlessly with those of Stellantis and the two can therefore help each other to achieve those plans earlier and better. It also helps that Symbio, like Stellantis, is not only active in Europe, but also in the US. There it is already involved in the development of hydrogen-powered trucks.
If Stellantis’ buyback plans go ahead, the deal should close in the first half of 2023.
