Car sales 2022: Kia by far the largest

Kia knocks Volkswagen off the throne. At least, in the Netherlands. Of all new passenger cars registered in the Netherlands in the past year, no less than ten percent was a Kia. However, the most popular car in the Netherlands was of a completely different brand.

The calendar is now set to 2023, which means that thanks to Bovag, RAI Association and RDC, we can map out how many new passenger cars will be registered in the Netherlands in 2022. There were a total of 312,129, 3.2 percent less than in the whole of 2021. The Dutch car market has thus reached a new low. Never before have so few new passenger cars been registered. In the last month of 2022, 30,900 new passenger cars were registered. That was no less than 12.3 percent less than in the same month of 2021. Just like 2021, 2022 was also a car year in which deliveries did not go smoothly due to a worldwide shortage of computer chips and other problems in the production chain. Of all new passenger cars registered in the Netherlands in 2022, no less than 23.5 percent were fully electric cars. So almost a quarter. In 2021, that percentage was still 19.8 percent.

Most popular brand

In 2022, Kia was by far the most popular brand in the Netherlands. Of the more than 312,000 cars registered in our country, 30,036 were Kia. This means that the brand accounted for a market share of 9.6 percent in 2022. It is the first time since 2005 that Volkswagen is not the most popular brand in our country. Volkswagen is in second place with 25,993 registrations and thus accounts for a market share of 8.3 percent. Toyota, Peugeot and BMW are in third to fifth place.

Hyundai can also be proud of it. Although the brand is not in the top five, it does ram into the Top 10. Hyundai sold 17,026 cars in the Netherlands in 2022, 30 percent more than a year earlier. The i10 is the brand’s most popular car with 3,975 units, followed by the Tucson, Kona, i20 and Ioniq 5.

Brand Number of Market share
1 kia 30,036 9.6 percent
2 Volkswagen 25,993 8.3 percent
3 Toyota 25,362 8.1 percent
4 peugeot 21,242 6.8 percent
5 BMW 17,138 5.5 percent

Most popular car in the Netherlands

However, the most popular car in the Netherlands in 2022 was not a Kia. With 9,640 registrations, the Peugeot 208 was the best-selling car in the Netherlands. The small Frenchman accounted for a market share of 3.1 percent. In second and third place we do find two models from Kia, successively the Picanto (7,391 units) and the Niro (7,277 units). The Volvo XC40 (6,821 units) and the Opel Corsa (6,669 units) are in places four and five.

Brand Fashion model Number of Market share
1 peugeot 208 9,640 3.1 percent
2 kia Picanto 7,391 2.4 percent
3 kia Niro 7,277 2.3 percent
4 Volvo XC40 6,821 2.2 percent
5 Opel Corsa 6,669 2.1 percent

2023

Bovag and RAI Association expect 2023 to be a better year than 2022 and are aiming for a total of 340,000 new passenger cars for this year. Some of the cars that were already ordered last year will probably be delivered this year. However, the development of the market is highly dependent on the national and international economy and on geopolitical developments. This year, a tax addition of 16 percent applies to business drivers for electric cars. So just like last year. However, this percentage does apply to up to €30,000 of the taxable price. Last year it was still €35,000. You simply have to pay 22 percent addition to the remaining part. If you want to buy an electric car this year, you can count on a subsidy amount of €2,950 for the purchase of an EV of up to €45,000. Last year this amount was €3,350.
