Varied in the new year
New year, new AutoWeek! Number 1 is for sale in stores from Wednesday or you can get it in your mailbox this week. We kick off the new year with thick diesel station wagons, fresh SUVs, a nice and potent Volvo C30 and a real Peugeot 406 Coupé.
Like its predecessor Kadjar, the brand new Renault Austral is based on the platform of the Nissan Qashqai. For the rest, on the other hand, the mid-range SUV is Renault through and through, including the idiosyncratic powertrain. The fresh Frenchman can prove himself against the popular Hyundai Tucson.
After a cautious start with the electric ZS a few years ago, we see the range of MG slowly growing. For example, there is now the station wagon MG 5 and with the MG 4 there is a hatchback that competes with the Volkswagen ID3. Is the low price the only reason to choose the MG? After almost four productions, the Audi E-Tron is slipping into its midlife crisis and it’s time for a rejuvenation cure. In this case, this is accompanied by a new type designation. From now on, the hefty EV from Ingolstadt will be called Q8 e-tron and with its larger battery capacity it can last a few more years, while a competitor from its own home will make its entrance next year.
Tired of all that electrical news? Then this week’s second-hand double test probably appeals to you. You saw them at the top of the page: the BMW 530d Touring and Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI. You have to be a bit crazy about cars and driving to get into one of these two used cars, given the solid fixed and variable costs. There is a rich reward because traveling doesn’t get much nicer than this. Large coach, comfortable seats and in both cases a jewel of a six-cylinder diesel with automatic transmission.

Finally, we have a guest in Op de Rollenbak that we can appreciate: the Volvo C30. As far as we are concerned, a classic of the future. Especially with the five-cylinder turbo engine and in this color scheme it is a treat. Owner Martin Reuselaars is very aware of this. He went deep for his Volvo. It is a story of true car love, regardless of the result of the dynamometer measurement.
