Second-hand car prices at new record high

In November, the average price of a used car rose to a new record high for the umpteenth time and second-hand cars also became more expensive in December. In fact, occasions have never been so expensive before. So another new record.

Autoscout24.nl reports that the average price of a used car offered on its website in December was €25,215. That is an absolute record. The previous price record was broken in November. Then the average price of a used car on Autoscout24.nl rose to €24,428. This is a price increase of 1.7 percent compared to November, but of no less than 16 percent compared to December 2021. In percentage terms, second-hand prices in the Netherlands increased the fastest in all of Europe.

The Netherlands is certainly not the only country where the prices of used cars are skyrocketing. In all European countries where Autoscout24.nl is active – with the exception of Italy and Austria – used cars became more expensive in December. Price records were also broken in Germany, Belgium and France. In France, the average second-hand price increased by 15.7 percent to no less than €30,322. In Germany we observe an increase of 12.2 percent to €28,713. In Austria, a used car is for sale for an average of €28,519 (+14.5 percent) on Autoscout24 and in Belgium for €25,563 (+11.8 percent).

ING recently predicted that second-hand prices will not increase as much in the near future, but that claim has been denied for the time being.
