Many electric cars cannot tow a trailer. During the holiday you want to be able to go out with a caravan. AutoWeek provides tips for an electric car that can tow a caravan.
The construction of an electric car often does not allow for the installation of a towbar. This is usually due to the placement of the battery. Or the battery gets too hot due to the extra load of a trailer or bicycle carrier. In that case, the RDW does not state a trailer weight on the license plate. That is not convenient for many people during the holiday season. That is why we give tips for an electric car that can tow a caravan.

Selection of electric car that can tow a caravan
Check the AutoWeek CarBase for an overview of electric cars that can tow a maximum braked trailer weight of at least 1,100 kg. If you have a heavier caravan, you can easily adjust the weight on this page to your situation. And is your caravan lighter? Then you may be able to select more cars. At the beginning of 2023 there were 111 electric cars that can tow a caravan with a braked mass of up to 1,100 kg.
If you set the bar at a minimum of 1,501 kg maximum braked trailer weight, then there is still a choice of roughly 96 cars. In that respect, it is quite possible to find an electric car that can tow a caravan. Even if it shouldn’t cost the main prize. And are those cars expensive? A Smart #1 with a towing weight of 1,600 kg for less than €45,000 is one of the cars that qualify.

Note: your driver’s license
What you do have to take into account is your driver’s license. With a B driving license you can tow a combination of up to 3,500 kg if the trailer is heavier than 750 kg. With an electric car and a heavier caravan, you will soon have to do the math. In its own mass, the car quickly goes towards (or over) the 2,000 kg empty mass and you still have to add the occupants and luggage. You must then take the maximum weight of the car on the registration certificate and add the maximum mass of the caravan. That may not exceed 3,500 kg to be allowed to drive on the road with your B driving license. Or you have to get the BE driving license, which allows you to drive a heavier combination. Did you obtain your driving license BE before 19 January 2013? Then different rules apply to you. You may use any trailer or semi-trailer. There is no limit to empty weight and payload.
