Securing the oil industry
As of 2035, the European Union will have a sales ban on new cars that are not emission-free. The US state of Wyoming takes a different approach. That is precisely what wants to ban the sale of electric cars by 2035.
A handful of Republican lawmakers in the US state of Wyoming have come up with a very striking bill. Four senators have introduced a bill expressing support for “phasing out sales of new electric vehicles by 2035.”
The bill, if passed, would not actually herald the end of EV sales, US media argue. It would above all be an encouragement for companies and consumers, among others, to limit the sale of electric cars by 2035. Republican senator Jim Anderson tells the American website Cowboy State Daily that it mainly sends a signal: “If you don’t like our gasoline-powered cars, we don’t like your EVs.”
In the bill the senators are standing up for the local gas and oil industry. It even contains a provision that says that – if the bill is passed – the governor of the US state of California, among others, will receive a copy of the new law. In 2035, California will halt the sale of zero-emission cars.
A conspicuous political stunt? It looks like it.
