European car sales will also fall in 2022

Nearly 5 percent down

European car sales will also fall in 2022

Fewer new passenger cars will be registered in the European Union in 2022 than in the previous year. The percentage decrease is almost 5 percent.

In 2022, 322,129 new passenger cars will be registered in the Netherlands, 3.2 percent less than in 2021 and a new historic low. Fewer new passenger cars were also registered in the European Union last year than in 2021, according to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

In 2022, 9,255,930 new passenger cars will be registered in the European Union. That was 4.6 percent less than in 2021 and the smallest number since 1993. 2021 also did not go down in the books as a good year for the car industry. That year, the car industry recorded a decrease in the number of new registrations of 2.4 percent. According to ACEA, the lower number of registered cars is mainly due to supply chain issues that affected carmakers in the first half of 2022 in particular.

In Germany, with 2,651,357 new registrations, 1.1 percent more cars will be registered in 2022 than in 2021. Countries such as Belgium (-4.4 percent), France (-7.8 percent) and Spain (-5.4 percent) recorded a greater percentage decrease in the number of registered cars than the Netherlands. If we look outside the European Union, we see a decline there as well. In the United Kingdom, exactly 2 percent fewer new passenger cars were registered in 2022. In Norway, the number of registrations fell by 1.1 percent.

Although 2022 was not the best year for car manufacturers, there is hope. The last five months of 2022 showed positive figures. In December, the number of new registrations even increased by 12.8 percent.
