Toyota most stolen car brand in the Netherlands

More passenger cars were stolen last year than in 2021. In total, almost 6,000 cars were stolen in 2022. Toyota appears to be popular with the crooks’ guild. Not only is Toyota the most stolen car brand in the Netherlands, the most stolen car model in the Netherlands is also a Toyota.

In 2022, 5,973 passenger cars were stolen in the Netherlands. That is 11 percent more than in 2021. This is reported by the National Intelligence and Expertise Center for Vehicle Crime (LIV). However, the number of stolen passenger cars is lower than in 2019, the year before the outbreak of the corona virus. After all, 7,107 passenger cars were stolen in 2019. 45 percent of all stolen passenger cars were recovered. The theft of light commercial vehicles increased by 23% to 1,394 units.

Toyota knocks Volkswagen off the throne, but perhaps not in the way Toyota drivers prefer. Last year, Volkswagen was the most stolen car brand, but this year it is by far Toyota. Of all stolen passenger cars last year, 1,036 percent were a Toyota. This means that more than 17 percent of all passenger cars stolen in 2022 were Toyotas. The number of Toyotas in 2022 will be 83 percent (!) higher than in 2021. 43 percent of the stolen Toyotas will be found again. No less than 1 in 635 Toyotas in the Netherlands was stolen last year.

After Toyota, Volkswagen is the most stolen car brand in the Netherlands. Last year, 793 Volkswagens were stolen, 6 percent less than in 2021. Places three to five are occupied by Peugeot (452 ​​units), Renault (409 units) and Audi (339 units).

Most stolen models in the Netherlands – 2022

The Toyota RAV4 was by far the most stolen model in the Netherlands in 2022. 465 Toyota RAV4s were stolen in the Netherlands last year, no less than 156 percent more than a year earlier. So almost 8 percent of all cars stolen last year were a Toyota RAV4. This means that 1 in 78 RAV4s in the Netherlands were stolen last year. Last year, the Volkswagen Golf was the most stolen car in the Netherlands. It is in second place this year (290 units). In fourth and seventh place we also find cars from Toyota: the Auris and the C-HR. Hybrid Toyotas are popular in the dark circuit, among other things, because of the precious metals in the catalytic converter. At least the Auris proves that. Of the 193 stolen copies, 73 percent were found without a catalytic converter.

According to LIV, the theft of electric and hybrid vehicles increased by 74 percent to 1,002 units last year. No less than 771 of these were a Toyota. Passenger cars of three, four and five years old are relatively the most stolen and account for 27 percent of all thefts. Last year, 8 percent fewer cars from 0 to 3 years old were stolen. Striking: cars of 20 years or older were stolen 18 percent more last year than in 2021.
