Higher share than business

26 percent of privately purchased new cars are electric

More and more private individuals are purchasing an electric new car. This is evident from figures from the Rai Association. The percentage of privately purchased electric cars last year was higher than the percentage if all different buyers are included.

At the beginning of this month, the sales figures for 2022 were released and it turned out that 23.5 percent of all new cars sold last year were fully electric. Then, in addition to private individuals, business buyers are also included. Rai Association scrutinized the sales figures and concluded that the EV share was higher among private buyers. About 26 percent of all cars sold to private individuals were fully electric. This means a significant increase compared to 2021, when that share was still 11 percent, according to the Rai Association.

New hybrid cars are also gaining popularity. In 2022, about 36 percent of new cars purchased by private individuals will be partly electric. The advance of private electric and hybrid driving is of course at the expense of the popularity of cars with only a fuel engine. In 2021, they still accounted for roughly 43 percent of sales, in 2022 this was still rounded to 39 percent.

Most popular electric cars in the Netherlands

Last year, the Skoda Enyaq was the most popular electric new car across the Dutch market. The Tesla Model Y is also doing very well in the Netherlands, while the Model 3, which was once impossible to tow, is no longer in the top. The Peugeot e-208, the electric version of the most popular car in the Netherlands (and Europe) in 2022, took third place.
