GM wants small, electric and affordable pick-up

General Motors would hatch a plan to come up with a small electric pickup. You can take that ‘small’ seriously in this case, because the new EV would be even more compact than the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

The Maverick and the Santa Cruz, for those who lost it, were launched more or less simultaneously in 2021. This actually immediately created a new segment, because both cars are smaller than the pick-ups that are considered ‘compact’ in the US and the standard in Europe. They therefore operate under models such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux and, unlike those workhorses, are not based on a ladder chassis.

General Motors also seems to want to get started with that segment, but in its own way. According to Automotive News the American car giant is considering an even more compact, two-door pick-up with a cargo bed of about 1.20 to 1.37 meters. That is equal to slightly longer than the Ford and the Hyundai, but the General Motors product will still be a lot more compact due to the two-door cabin. According to insiders, the car will beAN‘ also ‘low’, and probably lacks the somewhat SUV-like approach that pick-ups often have. Combined with the two-door carriage, this may result in a vehicle in the style of Australian Utes or the Chevrolet El Camino of yesteryear. It was also less compact, and even less electric.

Another big difference from the other two: GM’s pickup must be fully electric. At least that is the idea, because at the moment the plan is still in the concept phase. According to rumors, the most important thing for GM is that the car becomes affordable. That should mean the base version costs less than $30,000. In addition to the North American market, the South American market can also be considered for such a small, two-door pick-up, although the question is whether and when EV adaptation will really get going there. For Europe, the car already seems less suitable due to its body shape, quite apart from the fact that GM’s volume brands Chevrolet and GMC are not officially represented here.
