Also in terms of consumption a mid-engine
The B segment is attracting more and more buyers in the Netherlands. You can also see this at Volkswagen, where the baton of the once so popular Golf has been taken over by the Polo. The more compact model claims 7th place in the Dutch sales ranking, making it by far the best-selling model from Wolfsburg. The sales numbers are therefore not too frugal. What about fuel consumption?
To gain insight into this, we look at the current model, which has been on the market since 2017. With the exception of one GTI, all 26 cars in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor are equipped with a 1.0 TSI petrol engine. Most of them have 95 hp, two are slightly stronger.
Consumption Polo 1.0 TSI 95 hp
Volkswagen specifies an expected consumption for the Polo 1.0 TSI with 95 hp of between 4.4 l/100 km (Comfortline) and 4.7 l/100 km (Highline), values above 1 in 21. Here come ‘our’ drivers not on, with an average consumption of 5.6 l / 100 km or 1 in 18.2. About 22 percent above the manufacturer’s specification.
The most inefficient driver achieves just 7.3 l/100 km with the Polo, but stopped tracking fuel consumption after 834 km. We will therefore never know whether the car became more economical after the ‘trial phase’. There are also outliers to the other side. For example, an owner has been driving for 15,425 km with a consumption of 1 to 24.6. With this 4.06 l/100 km, the score is 7.7 percent more economical than the manufacturer’s specification. A good second now drives 26,652 km long on average 1 in 22.3. Only 2 percent more than the factory promises.
More powerful engine, higher consumption?
Open door, you would say. Yet there is a driver who drives the 115 hp Polo Highline Business R to a consumption of 5.4 l / 100 km. Not during an economical drive with the wind at your back, but over a distance of 23,370 km and with an – in their own words – average driving style. This value will not be representative, but it is an indication that the greater capacity does not necessarily have to lead to higher consumption. Finally, the 2.0 GTI: it will not surprise anyone that the owner of this has an average consumption of 1 to 13.2.
In summary, the Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI can be quite economical, comparable to the Opel Corsa 1.2 Turbo. For really good consumption, owners have to make more effort than owners of a Toyota Yaris Hybrid, with which 1 to 23.3 can be achieved quite easily.
