‘Spotify is getting more expensive’ – this is when you start paying more

Following Apple Music, Spotify has also indicated that it will raise prices. How much more expensive will Spotify soon be?

Spotify and Apple Music raise prices

Three months ago, Apple Music in the United States increased subscription prices by $1 to $10.99 per month. The same happened in the Netherlands: as an individual user you now pay 10.99 euros per month instead of 9.99 euros.

After Apple Music, Amazon Music also followed with an increase in subscription prices. These are exactly the same prices: Amazon Music is also currently $ 9.99, but will soon rise to $ 10.99. The Netherlands will probably also have to deal with this price increase. Now Spotify has also expressed its intention to raise prices.

Music services have to deal with increased licensing costs

The higher subscription prices are related to increased licensing costs. With these higher license prices, artists will earn more money for streaming their music. This is passed on to the prices of the subscriptions, which means that almost all subscriptions increase by about one euro per month.

Good news for artists, but less good for your wallet. After Apple Music and Amazon Music, Spotify is now also planning to raise prices. Spotify is also not covered by the higher license costs and will probably include this in the new subscription prices. When will you pay more for your subscription and how much will it cost?

‘Spotify will be more expensive in 2023’

Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, has previously said that the company wants to follow Apple Music’s lead. He indicated that Spotify will most likely raise prices in 2023. The company must first consult internally and enter into discussions with the labels with which the company has contracts.

If Spotify actually gets more expensive, it will probably follow exactly the same prices as Apple Music and Amazon Music. Spotify currently costs 9.99 euros for an individual user. This price will then increase by one euro. For Spotify Premium you will then pay 10.99 euros per month as an individual user. The price increase of one euro is expected to apply to all Spotify subscriptions.

Music services keep the same prices

The music services will all keep virtually the same prices if the price increase continues. For now, Spotify is still the cheapest of the three, but we have to wait until Spotify also raises prices. When this will happen is still uncertain, but it is clear that Spotify will also become more expensive in 2023.
